The Choir at

St.Giles'Church Durham

St. Giles’ Church has a long choral tradition and the choir are in attendance at many services that are held within the church. The choir is affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music. This means that choir members regularly get to sing in large venues (Cathedrals!) and go on residential courses with expert tuition.

We have a mixed choir of adults and children – male and female – and are actively looking to recruit youngsters – BOYS and GIRLS from the age of 7 years. No previous experience is needed as full training is given.

What exactly do I get if I join?

You get free musical tuition with all books and music provided for your use. You also get the opportunity to study for awards and examinations with expert guidance. Young people get a small amount of “pocket money” from the parish for their attendance at church services whilst a member of the choir. You will also get to make new friends!

How old do I have to be?

Youngsters must be at least 7 years of age and be able to read to a reasonable standard for their age group. There is currently no upper age limit for adults.

Do I have to pay anything?

No. You will not have to pay anything for singing and music tuition. Instrumental lessons on both the organ and piano can be provided on request but there would be a fee for these, although some subsidies are available. If you book onto a residential singing course, you may be asked to contribute to the course fee.

Can I come and try out a session?

Yes. You can come along and try a session at any time to see if you want to join us. Just contact one of the organists to arrange a suitable time.

How far can I progress?

We currently have a number of members who are members of on of the regions “showpiece” choirs. We can also enter members for examinations up to ABRSM Grade 8 Level.
